Peeled Sweet Chestnuts

Nothing more, nothing less: sweet peeled chestnuts. Did you know that the name "chestnut" is actually a new word, and used to be "chesten nut"? This in turn descends from the Old French word chastain (now, châtaigne). However, the French word actually derives from Latin Castanea (which, by the way, is the scientific name of the tree), and traces to the Ancient Greek word κάστανον (sweet chestnut).

In Japan, chestnuts are always a part of the New Year's menu (おせち料理, osechi ryôri). Chestnuts represent both success and hard times—mastery and strength. The Japanese chestnut (kuri) was even in cultivation before rice! I kid you not.
